Trauma is a highly stressful event where your sense of control and safety seems challenged that leads to chronic disturbances that affect your ability to function the way you would like on a daily basis. We understand that these come in various shapes and sizes and one is more impactful than the other.

Decrease in ability to concentrate or to remember things.

Extreme mood swings, from numbness to guilt to anger.

Withdrawal from others and difficulty with trust.

rapid heart rate, muscle tension, or nausea when remembering certain events in the past.

When people think of Trauma they think of large traumas such as war’s, assault or catastrophic events. These single event experiences although are certainly traumatic and have potential to cause difficulties, small psychological and complex emotional traumas can be equally harmful. The severity of the event, as well as the support one has from others, affect the way one responds to a trauma.

At Atan Therapy with the support of your therapist, you will work to understand the relationship between your traumatic experiences and your current responses. Once you are able to start connecting the dots, you can then can approach yourself and your coping mechanisms with compassion and intention, and begin the process of healing. Some of your trauma symptoms may never diminish completely, but you’ll learn to cope with them and get your life back.
